Obituary for Verna Jean Cooper (LaFevers)

Verna Jean La Fevers Cooper, 90, passed away peacefully at her family home in Baxter TN on Feb 25, 2022.

Verna was born to Leonard and Ethel Price LaFevers in Moody MO July 2, 1931.  She was the only daughter and had 4 older brothers Edmond, Lowell, Lloyd, and Gerald Dee. She enjoyed playing piano and singing for community and school events.

Verna was known by family and close friends as Verna Jean. She graduated from Viola Arkansas Highschool at the tender age of 16. She was very smart and beautiful and was the valedictorian of her class. She met her husband Charles Cooper her senior year when he returned to high school to graduate with the senior class after serving in WW II for 2 years.

Verna and Charles married near Viola Arkansas in June of 1948.  They moved to Kansas City to look for work and to raise a family, initially living in Hickman Mills MO. They eventually moved to Raymore MO where they were the contractors for the construction of their home. Verna and Charles both enjoyed their new community and were very involved in community events such as Lions Club and the Zoning Board.  In 1979, they were original members of the brand new Community Bank of Raymore. Verna proudly sat on the Board of Directors. Verna enjoyed reading and writing. She submitted articles about Raymore activities on a weekly basis to the Belton Star-Herald.  Verna was the Coordinator of the Raymore Centennial Celebration in 1972 and continued planning the yearly Raymore Homecoming Celebration for a number of following years. Verna enjoyed going to church throughout her life. She was a member of the Belton Church of Christ and the Mountain Home Arkansas Church of Christ.

Verna enjoyed her family and friends immensely. She loved hosting huge family gatherings at home. She was famous for her homemade ice cream and chocolate topping.  She researched the history of the LaFevers and Price family trees.

Verna enjoyed being busy. She worked for the Bendix Corporation which evolved into Allied Signal and Honeywell where she retired in 1991.  Before retiring, Verna established a workplace literacy program and received a commendation from First Lady Barbara Bush.  Upon retirement, Verna and Charles returned to Arkansas to be closer to their roots. They started an Antique business, The Magnolia House, in Mountain Home Arkansas which they enjoyed and managed together until Charles' death in 2003.

Verna is survived by her three children Michael Charles Cooper of Columbia MO, Leta Cooper Mann of Nashville TN, and Suzanne Cooper of Osage Beach MO. She enjoyed her beautiful grandchildren Lauren Mann Heston and Jordan Mann and 2 great-grandchildren Owen and Orion Heston. She was especially close to her daughter's husbands Randy Mann and David Dearnley.

Verna will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Mt Calm Cemetery, close to her birthplace in Viola AR.
