Obituary

A private family graveside service for Mary McKenzie Darnell, 37, of Cookeville, will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Cookeville. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Mary Mac, as she was affectionately known, passed quietly at her home on Sunday, April 18, surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 18, 1983, in Cookeville.

Survivors include her parents, Janet McKinley and Mark Rogers, her son, Dax Darnell, a brother, Justin Richardson, and her Grandmother Mary Jo Rogers, all of Cookeville.

In addition, survivors include many loving aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins. Aunts and uncles include Mary Jean (John) Owen, Machelle (Jimmy) Cobb, Ken Denney, Shawn (Ann) Rogers, all of Cookeville, and an Uncle, Thom Marshall of Louisville, Kentucky. Mary Mac was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Jo and Eugene Denney, paternal grandfather, Gene Rogers, and by two loving aunts, Jenny (Rogers) Marshall of Louisville, Kentucky, and Kim (Denney) Young of Cookeville.

During her battle with cancer, Mary Mac met her boyfriend Nick Schumann of Crossville, Tennessee who was steadfast in assisting with Mary Mac’s cancer treatment and care. He never left her side until her death and we will always consider him family. Also, “Ms. Effy” of Upper Cumberland Hospice was diligent and particularly helpful in giving Mary Mac the best of care.

Mary Mac graduated from Cookeville High School and studied at Tennessee Tech University until she discovered her life’s work in radio at KISS 98.5. She became an integral broadcasting partner with Freaky Dave of “the Freak show” during the station’s early morning drive slot. Mary Mac’s dynamic personality became a staple on the show and she and Freaky Dave developed “the Freak Show” into one of the top broadcasting slots in the Upper Cumberland area.

To her family, she was Mac or Mackie, and she was known for her generosity of spirit, a lightning-quick wit, and a loving personality. She knew no stranger. Her son Dax was the apple of her eye and as she once said, “my greatest accomplishment”. She was a lover of all animals, especially dogs, and she was particularly proud of the radio station’s work with St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Upper Cumberland Hospice.
