Obituary for Alfred Lee Ballinger

Alfred Lee Ballinger, 82, of Cookeville, Tennessee, passed away May 3, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Ruby Ballinger; and
son-in-law, Pat Moran.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janice Bullion Ballinger;
daughters Karen (Scott) Walls, Jennifer Moran, and Amy (Marlen) Weaver;
grandchildren Tyler Walls, Danielle Walls, Julie (Scott) Proffitt, Emily
(Daniel) James, Ben Weaver, Elizabeth Weaver, Katie Weaver, Mallory
Weaver; great granddaughter Amelia Proffitt; brothers Dale (Kris)
Ballinger and Glenn (Diane) Ballinger.

Alfred grew up in Old Hickory, Tennessee. Upon graduation from DuPont
High School, he moved to Cookeville to attend Tennessee Technological
University where he received both his B.S. in Biology and his Master's
Degree in Biology/Wildlife Management. Alfred and his wife Janice made
Cookeville their new home, and they have been actively involved in this
community ever since.

Alfred loved the Lord, his family, this community, teaching, and
nature. His hobbies included hunting, canoeing, bowling, and golf.
Over his career, he held many different positions with many different
organizations.

At Algood Junior HIgh School, he was a teacher and basketball coach in
1967-68.

From 1969-1973, Alfred was the Director of Parks & Recreation and
Conservation for Putnam County/City of Cookeville where he was
instrumental in the early development of Burgess Falls, Jere Whitson
Park, Cookeville Community Center, and Cane Creek Park.

He was also an Instructor of Outdoor Recreation at Tennessee Tech in the
Health & Physical Education Department from 1976-1989. He taught classes
in backpacking, climbing, camping, canoeing, hiking, and more.
He led many students on many trips to such places as the Grand Canyon,
Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Virgin Falls, Scott's Gulf, and Cumberland
Island.

While at Tennessee Tech, he later served as Director of Continuing
Education.

Alfred was Chairman of the Board of Directors for Senior Citizens. He
was a Tennessee representative to the White House Conference on Aging
and was also involved with the Tennessee Commission on Aging.

Alfred was a TWRA Hunter Education Instructor for over 45 years, with
over 7,800 graduates from his classes. He received several awards from
TWRA, including the Instructor of the Year award. He was also inducted
into the Hunter Education Instructor Hall of Fame.

He was a small business owner as well. His family still owns and
operates both The Lamp and Lighthouse and Cumberland Mountain Outdoor
Sports located on the Courthouse Square in Cookeville.

Alfred was a Christian. He knew God as his Heavenly Father and Creator
of all nature that he loved. He knew Jesus as his Savior, and so now he
resides in Heaven. John 3:16

Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering for Alfred Ballinger will be at Crest Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, May 12, 2023, from 5:00-9:00pm.
